Wir haben auf der Plan B eine gute Heizung; aber durch die Einfachverglasung unserer Fenster geht die Wärme schnell wieder verloren. Wir haben deshalb überlegt, wie wir sie isolieren könnten. Von einem Zijlmaker haben wir eine Offerte eingeholt - sein Vorschlag war, vor die Fenster mit Druckknöpfen eine Isoliermatte zu spannen. Das hätte rund 1000 Euro gekostet und das Innere der Plan B in absolute Dunkelheit getaucht. Nein danke, haben wir gesagt, und uns nach Alternativen umgesehen.
The volume of air that needs to be heated onboard Plan B is modest and the diesel heating system is pretty good, plus we have a couple of powerful little electric heaters. But the trick to staying warm, we all know, is to counter heat loss and our single-pane windows are obvious leaks. We got a quote from a tentmaker for some dreadful window covers made of totally opaque plastic. A thousand euro and utter darkness. Not attractive.
Im Internet ist Roy auf den Tipp gestossen, die Fenster mit Bläschenplastik zu isolieren. Man schneidet den Plastik genau zu, reinigt die Fenster gut und besprüht sie mit Wasser. Dann klebt man die Folie, Bläschen nach unten, direkt auf das Glas. Zur besseren Befestigung, zum Beispiel bei überhängenden Fenstern, kann man dem Wasser noch etwas Glyzerin beigeben.
Surfing for alternatives, we came upon a clever, cheap and light-transmitting solution: bubble wrap applied directly to the glass. Attachment is supremely simple: cut a panel to fit, spray water on the window, smooth the bubble wrap onto the glass (bubble side down) and, presto, it holds. And it creates the desired dead air space for insulating purposes. We'll see how it holds up. Apparently some glycerine added to the water spray would help with sticking. So far, we haven't needed it.

Mit dieser Methode bleibt es im Boot hell und wesentlich länger warm, auch wenn die Heizung nicht läuft. Wenn es richtig kalt wird, können wir von aussen noch eine zweite Isolationsschicht anbringen.
The results are promising. The boat does seem to hold heat better and we've thought when it's really cold we might add another layer outside. We'll see. Meanwhile, the cabin has an igloo feel to it.
Auf der Plan B fühlt es sich ein bisschen an wie in einem Iglu.
The crew in any case finds it restful. Perhaps it's their new, unshorn sheepskins, which they truly love.
